This past week we followed the Gatineau River past adventure resorts and, to my surprise, fertile farmland. (I had assumed the Laurentians were all rock.) We reached Ottawa on Thursday and followed the Capital Pathway right along the bank of the Ottawa River, below the Parliament Buildings. We watched the Senators beat the Rangers in the Canadian Tire Centre (really?), then spent the night in Carleton Place on the Mississippi River (really!).
We followed the 81 km Cataraqui Trail between Smiths Falls and Harrowsmith. It was a beautiful stretch of gravelled “rails to trails”, and a good example of how communities and recreational clubs have pulled together to create the 24,000 km system of routes that make up the Trans Canada Trail.
We spent Sunday night in the community of Sharbot Lake. This week we begin our virtual tour of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowlands.
